Words from the Director

As our world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, the need for professionals who can harness data analytics and artificial intelligence to address these challenges has never been greater. The MSc in Earth and Environmental Analytics for Sustainability at CUHK represents our commitment to preparing the next generation of environmental data scientists.

Our programme combines traditional Earth system science with advanced computational methods, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. Students will gain expertise in handling diverse environmental datasets, from satellite imagery to sensor networks, while developing proficiency in environmental modeling and ESG analysis. This unique positioning ensures our graduates are equipped with the precise skill set needed in today’s environmental sector.

Programme structure

Courses

Required (five courses):

  • Statistical methods and data analysis
  • Numerical methods and modeling
  • Machine learning, AI, and big-data analytics
  • Scientific applications in ESG analysis (prepare for EFFAS Certified ESG Analyst, CESGA)
  • Frontiers of climate and environmental sciences OR Frontiers of applied geophysical sciences

 

Electives (three courses from the following):

  • Principles and applications of remote sensing
  • System thinking and diagnostics for sustainability
  • Climate risk analysis (prepare for EFFAS Climate Risk Analyst, ECRA)
  • Cutting-edge topics in Earth and environmental sciences
  • Research project
  • Advanced research project (does not count toward credit requirement)
  • Other advanced courses in Earth and environmental sciences

Admissions

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a related quantitative field, normally with Second Class Honours or an average grade of B or above.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL 550 (paper-based) / 79 (internet-based), IELTS 6.5, or equivalent qualifications.

Application Deadlines

Applications for the 2026-2027 academic year open in September 2025.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until all places have been filled and thus early applications are strongly encouraged. Please submit all materials before the deadlines:

  • Priority round: 31 January 2026
  • Final round: 30 April 2026

Study Period

The normative study period is:

  • Full-time: 1 year
  • Part-time: 2 years
Fees & Financial Support

The tuition fee for the MSc programme is HK$180,000, calculated at HK$7,500 per credit.

Financial Support

  • Up to five Merit-based scholarships for outstanding students (awarded in the priority round)
  • Opportunities for research assistantships
