Three secondary school students from the Tsung Tsin Christian Academy visited our Department during 14th – 16th July, 2025
We provided six sessions for secondary school students as per their ‘Experiencing Workplace’ programme, jointly hosted by the Tsung Tsin Christian Academy and Breakthrough. Our sessions aim to help secondary school students gain a deeper understanding of university life and scientific research.
Session 1 – Attending the machine learning workshop (led by Mr. Ivan WONG)
The students attended the machine learning workshop in SC329 with our fellow undergraduate student and learnt some fundamental AI concepts, such as how it works and what they can do for us.
Session 2 – Understanding Atmospheric Research I (led by Dr. Mingyuan LIU and Mr. Biao LUO)
Our postgraduate student, Mr. Biao LUO from Professor Amos TAI and Professor Shixian ZHAI’s group, is showing secondary school students how we collect air and rainwater samples at our on-campus atmospheric observation site.
Session 3 – Engaging in Weather in a Tank (led by Dr. Ronald LI)
We organized a weather-in-a-tank workshop for the secondary students. We performed hands-on experiments in the lab to simulate extratropical cyclones based on Earth’s rotation and the equator-to-pole temperature gradient. More importantly, we were able to quantify the associated heat transport power, which matched well with the theoretical equation.
Session 4 – Engaging in geology work (led by Miss Eugenia LAI)
The geo-lab session aims to provide the students with basic concepts of studying geology, to explain the differences between geology and geography, and to learn how knowledge in high school geography can be connected to geology. Students were asked to help make an inventory of the mineral and rock samples of SC331, in which they were required to provide detailed descriptions of the specimens, like what the geologists do in the field.
Session 5 – Understanding Atmospheric Research II (led by Dr. Leo NG)
We organized a school tour for secondary students, which included a visit to the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change to learn more about the impacts of climate change on polar regions and its effects on our daily lives. We also shared our past experiences of studying at undergraduate programme and conducting research at postgraduate programme.
Session 6 – Understanding Atmospheric Research III (led by Dr. Jia MAO)
In this workshop held in SC329, students explored the current state, causes, and impacts of climate change and air pollution. They also learned how to collect, process, and visualize environmental and climatic data using Excel and Python through a hands-on session.
